Acer japonica 'Aconitifolium' (An extraordinary tree with large green leaves with deeply cut lobes creating a fern like lush appearance. Small, reddish flowers in spring followed by prominent red seeds in the fall. The 'Acontifolium' refers to its ferny foliage being similar to Aconitum (monkshood). Common name 'Dancing Peacock' refers to the similarity in form and many colors. Fall color ranging in reds, oranges, golds and purples. Although rated at Zone 5, we have been told that it is hardy here. Note that this is for a part shade area -- it likes more shade than sun or 4-6 hours of morning sun. It should be sited with protection from hot afternoon sun as well as strong winds. It can be left to create a cascade of foliage or staked. Any pruning should only be done in late fall to mid winter. 10 year size is approx. 3' tall.)
