Catalpa speciosa (Large bold leaves of a medium green to yellow green. The flowers are the real showstopper. White bell-shaped, orchid-like flowers to 2" long have purple and yellow inner spotting and very fragrant. Flowers in such abundance covering the lawn like snow when they finally drop. Mid June blooming. Long, thin fruit pods appear in late summer and often persist throughout winter. It's fun to press the large leaves and display them at Thanksgiving -- they develop beautiful olive tones. Our "grandfather" Catalpa can be enjoyed from the street -- it offers a great oriental form.)
