Senna hebecarpa
(American Wild Sensitive Plant)
3-6' tall
Sun to Part Sun
Zone 4-9
Wild senna is a large, long-lived perennial -- a legume type. It has very attractive foliage in abundant clusters of yellow flowers. The medium to dark green compound leaves are pinnate with about 10-20 leaflets. Clusters of flower buds form at the axils of the compound leaves on the upper portion of the plant. Yellow flowers appear from July to August. Each flower is comprised of 5 yellow sepals and petals, 10 stamens with black anthers and a conspicuous pistil with long white hairs. The pea pod shaped seed pods are green at first, then turn dark brown as they mature. The top growth is slow to develop as it initially sends its energy into the root system. This slow top growth in the first two years is normal - especially in early spring. Once established, the growth will be excellent and then becomes very drought tolerant. It is a native of the eastern US and into Canada and as far west as Wisconsin. It is now considered an endangered plant. The distinctive foliage and stature with a very open see-through appearance, add to its fine qualities.

This well behaved Tansy has large clusters of creamy white, yellow centered daisies blooming in mid summer. Lovely dark green fern foliage. I find it so much fun to discover the interesting and beautiful little secrets plants hold. Our grandchildren love to hear how the petals on this plant "droop" at the end of the day -- as if sad to see the day come to a close. The next day brings the petals standing at attention again. This rare plant is among the plants used in Cotswold Garden.

Thalictrum 'Elin'
(Meadow Rue)
8-10' tall
Part Shade to Sun
Zone 4-8
Gorgeous foliage emerges in frilly saturated tones of purple, then grows and grows. (Read that 1st sentence again. It's true. Be sure to plant 'Elin' in your garden and see the spring color as it emerges and maintains in the cool spring temps -- then next February you'll be able to see it (from your memory, of course). This dramatic plant is another of my favorites. It never needs staking! The "plain" light colored flowers in airy multitudes sway with the slightest breeze, rising up from it's inconsequential status and filling an important and long remembered element in the fall garden.

Thalictrum fendleri
(Mountain Meadow Rue)
60-72" tall
Part Shade to Sun
Zone 5-9
I was just ecstatic to see this plant emerge from the seed trays (thalictrum seeds are short lived) and then develop into this lacy gorgeous and very different Meadow Rue. Spring green small squarish leaflets are held along compound leaves on stems to six feet. Frothy greenish yellow flowers in mid summer. This is a plant that provides wonderful texture as well as vertical elements. I'm not sure how this performs in full shade as this has always had a sunny location here. To save summer, I always clip Thalictrum foliage to press for looking at in the winter. It's so beautiful.

Thalictrum 'Splendide'
(Meadow Rue)
48-60" tall
Part Shade to Sun

This is a new Meadow Rue of the delavayi type which gives 'Splendide' its fine foliage and multiple blooms beginning in summer and continuing for a long time. There is a lacy mass of green foliage, then tall, burgundy stalks bearing clouds of lavender mauve flowers having cream colored stamens. Like 'Hewitt's Double', this will form a huge cloud of airy flowers similar to Baby's Breath -- but held up in the air. Consider placing among other tall plants -- or you may want to add support.
